The Solihull Approach: A guide for parents
Parenting can be challenging, but what if there was a way to make
it a little bit easier?
What if there was a way to understand your child’s behaviour better
and build a stronger relationship with them?
This is where the Solihull Approach comes in.
The Solihull Approach is a parenting program that’s been around for
over 25 years, and we use it as a framework when supporting
families.
It’s based on the idea that emotional containment is essential for
effective parenting. Emotional containment is having the support
you need to be able to manage your own emotions and therefore be
able to help your child manage theirs, in a way that’s healthy and
constructive.
The Solihull Approach teaches parents how to do this through a
variety of techniques, including:
- Reflective listening: This involves listening to your child’s feelings and needs without judgment.
- Empathy: This is about trying to see things from your child’s perspective and understand why they’re feeling the way they are.
- Positive reinforcement: This involves praising your child when they behave in a positive way and helping them to develop positive coping strategies.
The Solihull Approach is something we can introduce at many
different stages of our parenting journey, so whether you are
pregnant or parenting a teenager or anything in between- the
Solihull approach can work for you and your family.
It can take time and effort to learn and implement the techniques, it
can have great outcomes.
Parents who have used the Solihull Approach report that it has
helped them to:
- Understand their child’s behaviour better
- Build a stronger relationship with their child
- Reduce conflict in the home
- Improve their child’s emotional well-being
