Building A Happy Baby – A Guide For Parents
The Building a Happy Baby leaflet is a resource from UNICEF UK that provides information on how to create a happy and healthy start for your baby including:
- The importance of bonding with your baby
- How to respond to your baby’s needs
- The benefits of breastfeeding
- How to create a nurturing environment for your baby
- How to promote your baby’s development
We support families in recognising and utilising ways they can
support their babies’ development throughout the perinatal
period.
Key messages for parents:
Focus on bonding – Emotional bonding is the close emotional connection that you develop with your baby. It is essential for your baby’s physical and emotional development and there are lots of ways to do it both during pregnancy and once baby is born.
Respond to your baby’s needs – Babies communicate their needs through crying, body language, and facial expressions. You can begin to learn to read your baby’s cues and respond to them with a feed or cuddle whenever they need it.
Consider breastfeeding – It is the preferred infant feeding choice. It provides your baby with all the nutrients they need, has many health benefits for both you and your baby and is a great way to bond.
Create a nurturing environment for your baby – Your baby will need a safe and comfortable environment, including a place to sleep. They will benefit from lots of skin-to-skin contact, and opportunities for social interaction.
Your baby’s development – You can provide your baby with stimulating activities, give them things to look at and talk to them.
You can build a happy baby!
